Temporary Skills Shortage Visa
The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (Subclass 482) supports Australian businesses in addressing skill shortages by sponsoring skilled workers from abroad. This visa provides temporary employment opportunities, often leading to permanent residency.
Key Visa Streams
- Short-Term Stream: Valid for up to 2 years (or up to 4 years for international trade obligations) for occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).
- Medium-Term Stream: Offers a 4-year validity for roles on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and a pathway to permanent residency after fulfilling specific criteria.
- Labour Agreement Stream: Designed for roles under an agreement between the employer and the Australian government.
Updated Requirements and Recent Changes
Work Experience Requirement: Effective from 23 November 2024, the work experience requirement for the TSS visa will be reduced from 2 years to 1 year. This update applies across all streams and facilitates faster entry into the workforce for skilled professionals.
Permanent Residency Transition: From 25 November 2023, TSS visa holders can qualify for the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa under the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream after working for their sponsoring employer for just 2 years (reduced from the previous 3-year requirement). This change broadens access to permanent residency, benefiting short-term stream holders who previously had limited pathways.
