Recognising new higher skilled occupations on the National Occupation List
The National Occupation List (NOL) replaced the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) as New Zealand’s official job classification system in November 2024, with a further update of new roles on 1 July 2025.
We continue to use ANZSCO to determine requirements for employers and Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applicants while the NOL is being integrated into our systems.
From 3 November 2025, our systems will recognise approximately 90 new roles at skill level 1 to 3 for the AEWV, to reflect changes to the NOL. There are a small number of AEWV holders employed to do work that is directly relevant to the requirements and responsibilities of these new roles, but who are currently in roles recognised as skill level 4 or 5.
Some of these people have visas with a 3-year maximum continuous stay that are due to expire before 3 November 2025. We have created a temporary pathway under the Specific Purpose Work Visa for 30 of the news roles so that this small cohort of AEWV holders can extend their maximum continuous stay to 5 years where an employer intends to appoint them into one of the new higher skilled roles.
This will be open for applications from 8 September 2025 to 2 November 2025. To be eligible, an AEWV holder must: have an AEWV expiring on or before 30 November 2025 be reaching their maximum continuous stay for their current role be doing work now that closely matches the requirements and responsibilities of these new roles have at least 3 years’ relevant skills and experience to do this work (or a recognised qualification) have a job offer with their current employer to work in one of these newly recognised roles. Their employer must have current accreditation.
For employees with an AEWV expiring from 1 December 2025, the usual AEWV process will apply, including a requirement to advertise and apply for a Job Check.
